| Coppicing
For many years Rachel Huggett has been passionate about ecology
and sustainability issues. As a member of the Dorset Coppice
Group (DCG) she is involved in managing the hazel coppice
in Bonsley Wood, North Dorset.
Following ancient techniques, the
wood is coppiced to encourage new growth and promote the establishment
of natural habitat for native wildflowers and insects.
Rachel’s greenwood carvings
can be found throughout the nature trail at Bonsley Wood.
Greenwood Projects
Rachel does green wood commissions for nature trails,
woodland estates, schools, community projects and private
gardens.
Commissions include nature markers, carved
rustic signs, totem poles, benches and other types of green
woodwork.
Carving Demonstrations
The DCG have a regular presence at woodland fairs where they
demonstrate a variety of traditional coppice skills to the
public.
Rachel regularly interacts with the
public and holds demonstrations of woodcarving at these events.
Workshops
Rachel’s workshops on woodcarving and related woodland
craft activities are held at the DCG Living Classroom, a sustainable
timber building opened in April 2006 by Princess Anne.
The Living Classroom was built with
a DEFRA grant so members of the public can learn about ancient
coppicing skills, woodland habitats and more through workshops
run at the Classroom and Open Days.
Rachel teaches woodcarving workshops for
community projects across the South and in London. See Community
Projects.
